A Labour government will build a Britain that rewards hard work, not just privilege or luck, and we will work to ensure the next generation does has the opportunities to do better than the last.
First, we’ll tackle the cost of living crisis. Freezing gas and electricity bills until 2017, limiting the rise in rail fairs and ban rip-off letting fees for those who rent their homes. We’ll also make sure that the tax system is fair for everyone, not just the rich. We must transform the British economy so that it works for all of us, not just those at the top.
Second, we’ll protect the services that matter to people. We’ll end the privatisation of the NHS begun under this government by repealing their failed Health and Social Care Act and rebuilding a system that puts people before profit. We’ll cut waiting times, make sure you can get a GP appointment within 48 hours and boost mental health care. We’ll raise school standards, ending the ridiculous situation where free schools can employ permanent teachers without qualifications. And we’ll give new powers to local councils and health bodies to meet local needs.
Third, we’ll help ordinary people get on the housing ladder by building 200,000 new homes by 2020 and we’ll support long-term renters with greater protection for their tenancies.
Fourth, we will make sure that work pays, to help people earn their way out of the cost of living crisis created by this government. We’ll raise the national minimum wage, cut tax for the majority of working people by bringing back a 10p tax rate and we’ll help families with young children by introducing 25 hours of free childcare for three and four-year-old children.
Fifth, we’ll get young people back to work with more emphasis on technical training and a big boost for apprenticeships to make sure they have the skills they need to succeed. We’ll guarantee a job for every young person out of work for more than a year and support them to make sure they get the job they need. We’ll back small businesses, creating a British investment bank to help them grow and cutting business rates for small firms.
And, on top of all that, we will work to revitalise our democracy, working to rebuild trust between the public and their representatives. We’ll scrap the Conservative’s gagging law which limits the right of charities and campaigners to fight for important causes, while big companies free to do as they please. We’ll put limits on what MPs can earn outside Parliament. And we will boost local government, returning powers and money to local people.
